Before Randy Travis’ stroke in 2013 he was arrested in Texas. He was arrested while driving under the influence of alcohol and the video footage was recorded. In the footage Randy is naked, disorderly, and completely not himself. His team had been fighting to block the release of this video for a very long time.
The Texas Supreme Court on Friday rejected an appeal by Randy Travis, the country music star who was trying to prevent the public release of a police video showing his 2012 arrest for driving while intoxicated. The decision, announced without comment, let stand a 2016 ruling by the Austin-based 3rd Court of Appeals, which said the dashboard camera video is a public record that must be released.
Travis’ lawyers had asked the Supreme Court to reverse the ruling, saying it would infringe on the privacy rights of people with mental health and medical issues.
According to mystatesman.com, According to court records, Department of Public Safety troopers were called to a one-car wreck outside of Tioga, a town about 60 miles north of Dallas where Travis lived. They found a naked Travis lying in the farm-to-market road, and tests later showed he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.21, more than double the legal limit to drive.
Right now I believe the courts should not make these videos public. I understand that they should, but the law has to have room for exceptions. If there are no exceptions in this world then even more people would end up behind bars. “The public may be entitled to know that he broke the law, but it is not entitled to gloat over his mental breakdown and embarrassing condition,” Travis’ lawyers told the Supreme Court. Randy is suffering now and was suffering then. I do not think releasing this would be fair It would attack his legacy too much. Do you agree?
